Pitched roofs are characterized by their sloping or angled design. The angle of the slope, known as the pitch, is more than 10°. Unlike flat roofs, which are level or nearly level, pitched roofs have a noticeable incline, allowing rainwater, snow, and debris to naturally flow off the surface, reducing the risk of water pooling and potential structural damage.

Parts of Pitched Roofs

Ridge
The highest point of the roof, where the two sloping sides meet, is called the ridge. It runs horizontally along the length of the roof.
Eaves
The eaves are the lower edges of the roof that overhang the walls of the building. They serve to direct rainwater away from the structure, protecting the walls and foundation.
Rafters
Rafters are sloping beams that run from the ridge to the eaves, providing the roof’s basic framework. They determine the angle of the roof slope.
Fascia
The fascia is a horizontal band that runs along the edge of the roof. It provides a finished appearance and is where gutters are typically attached.
Soffit
The soffit is located beneath the eaves and bridges the gap between the exterior wall and the edge of the roof. It is often ventilated to allow air circulation in the attic, preventing moisture buildup.
Gable Ends
In gable roofs, the triangular portion formed by the intersection of two sloping roof planes is called the gable end. It is often finished with siding or other materials.
Types of Pitched Roofs
1. Lean-To Roof
A lean-to roof, also known as a shed roof or single-pitched roof, is a simple and economical roofing design that consists of a single, sloping surface. It is typically attached to a taller existing structure, such as a house, a garage, or a barn.

2. Couple Roof
A couple roof, also known as a double-pitched or gable roof, is a basic roof design consisting of two inclined roof surfaces that meet at the highest point, forming a ridge. The two lengths of rafters are the inclined beams that constitute the roof’s framework.

3. Closed Couple Roof
A closed couple roof, also known as a closed couple truss, is a specific type of roofing structure that utilizes closely spaced rafters with a tie beam to form a truss. This design provides additional stability and support compared to an open couple roof, which lacks the tie beam.

4. Collar Roof
A Collar Roof is a type of roofing structure where the height of the ceiling joists is raised, creating additional space in the roof area. This design allows for the construction of upper rooms in the roof space, which can be a practical use of the available space.

5. Gambrel Roof
Gambrel roofs are double pitched with a break in the roof slope. The pitch angle above the break is less than 45 relative to the horizontal, whilst the pitch angle below the break is greater. Generally, these angles are 30 and 60. Gambrels are useful in providing more attic headroom and frequently incorporate dormers and roof lights. They have a variety of constructional forms.

Construction of Pitched Roofs
The construction of a pitched roof involves the following key steps to ensure structural integrity and proper functionality:
- Begin with a well-thought-out architectural design that includes the type of pitched roof, dimensions, pitch angle, and other specific details.
- Acquire the necessary materials, including roof trusses or rafters, roofing boards or sheathing, underlayment, roofing material (such as shingles, tiles, or metal sheets), nails, screws, and other relevant hardware.
- Start by establishing the ridge, which is the highest point of the roof. This is done by attaching a temporary ridge board along the top of the supporting walls.
- If using rafters, position and secure them to the top plate of the supporting walls, ensuring they are evenly spaced and aligned with the ridge.
- If using trusses, lift and position them onto the walls and secure them in place.
- For roofs with rafters, attach a permanent ridge board along the temporary ridge board to secure and stabilize the roof structure.
- Apply the roof decking material over the rafters or trusses. Nail or screw it securely to create a flat and stable surface.
- Install a layer of underlayment over the decking. This provides an additional barrier against moisture.
- Apply the chosen roofing material according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Advantages of Pitched Roofs
Pitched roofs offer several advantages which are as under:
- Pitched roofs are often considered more visually appealing.
- The sloping design allows rainwater and snow to easily run off.
- Pitched roofs can be designed with features like vents and insulation, which contribute to better airflow and energy efficiency.
- When well-constructed and maintained, pitched roofs can have a longer lifespan compared to some other roof types.
- The steep slopes of a pitched roof can create usable space in the form of an attic or loft, adding to the functional area of a building.
Disadvantages of Pitched Roofs
- The construction of a pitched roof can be more complex and may require more materials compared to simpler roof types, resulting in higher initial costs.
- Cleaning and maintaining a pitched roof can be more difficult.
- The steep slope of a pitched roof can limit the placement of solar panels.
- While a pitched roof can provide attic or loft space, the steep slopes can limit the usability of this area compared to a flat roof.
- The construction of a pitched roof can be more intricate and time-consuming, requiring skilled labor and expertise.
