Types of Rocks: An Introduction

Rocks are naturally occurring solid aggregates or masses of minerals or mineraloids. They are composed of one or more minerals, which are crystalline solids with a specific chemical composition and a defined atomic structure.

There are three main types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. These three types of rocks are formed through different processes, and they have different characteristics.

Intrusive igneous rocks are formed when magma cools slowly beneath the surface of the earth. Some examples of intrusive igneous rocks are:

  • Diorite is a coarse-grained rock composed mainly of plagioclase feldspar, biotite, hornblende, and/or pyroxene.
  • Gabbro is a coarse-grained rock composed mainly of plagioclase feldspar and pyroxene.
  • Granite is a coarse-grained rock composed mainly of quartz, feldspar, and mica.
  • Peridotite is a coarse-grained rock composed mainly of olivine and pyroxene.

Extrusive Igneous Rock

Extrusive igneous rocks are formed when lava cools quickly on the surface of the earth. Some examples of extrusive igneous rocks include:

  • Andesite is a fine-grained rock composed mainly of plagioclase with other minerals such as hornblende, pyroxene, and biotite.
  • Basalt is a dark and fine-grained rock found abundantly beneath the surface of the earth. Basalt is especially helpful in making cobblestones, statues, and stone wool.
  • Obsidian typically possesses a smooth, glass-like texture and is predominantly jet black in color, although it can also appear in various hues.

Sedimentary Rocks

Sedimentary rocks form at or near the Earth’s surface, as opposed to metamorphic and igneous rocks, which form deep within the Earth. The most important geological processes that cause the formation of sedimentary rocks are erosion, weathering, dissolution, precipitation, and lithification. Sedimentary rocks can be classified into three types: clastic, chemical, and organic sedimentary rocks.

Clastic sedimentary rocks are formed from the accumulation of fragments of pre-existing rocks. Chemical Sedimentary Rocks
